    Programs, often offered in the schools or in other community settings, that attempt to protect children from physical, sexual and/or emotional abuse or exploitation through a variety of educational interventions which may focus on children of various ages, parents, people who work with children and/or the community at large. The sessions may offer suggestions for children and/or parents regarding ways of avoiding or handling an abusive or potentially abusive situation and/or information about the indicators and incidence of abuse, requirements for reporting abuse and community resources that are available to children who have been abused and to their families.

    Education/Prevention ServicesParsons' Prevention Program provides in home social work services to families identified as having children at risk of foster care placement or who are already in placement with the need for reunification or alternative permanency planning. Services include in-home counseling, advocacy, supervised visitation, permanency planning assessment, education and support groups, collaboration, case management, and information and referral. The purpose of the service is to reduce the risk of placement of children ages 0-18 or to shorten lengths of stay for those already in placement. Risks include child abuse-neglect issues, juvenile justice involvement, or child behavioral problems.     Mental Health ServicesSexual Trauma and Recovery Services provides a range of free and confidential services to all victims of sexual assault in Washington County. STARS has a 24/7 hotline, and provides crisis intervention, short-term counseling, information and referrals.     Parent/Family Support ServicesThe Parent Effectiveness and Intervention Program is classroom-based parent education with intensive in-home intervention provided. Each twelve-week group is led by an experienced clinician-facilitator and includes assessment, consultation, counseling, skill building and support and eight weeks of office-based psycho-educational group and in-home intervention that focuses on specific parenting issues. PEIP provides thes services to parents-guardians who have a history of child protective involvement, or who are at risk for child protective involvement, or who have been identified by the Department of Social Services, the Department of Probation or other service providers as having the ability to benefit from improved parenting skills.     Protective ServicesChild Preventive Services is a program which serves families with severe and multiple problems to improve family functioning so that children can remain in their own home and avoid foster care.
